Potomac River Day: Joint Resolution


DRAFT---Potomac River Day: Joint Resolution
To issue a proclamation recognizing July 30, 1999 as “Potomac River Day”.

Whereas abundant clean water has been a vital asset of the Potomac River basin communities since their beginnings, providing transportation, drinking water supplies, sources of energy, habitat for fisheries and other living resources as well as opportunities for recreational, commercial, and residential development and activities. 

Whereas the Potomac River basin possesses outstanding esthetic, recreational, and economic value of present and potential benefit to the 5 million+ citizens of the basin; and

Whereas in appreciation of the activities underway, or planned, by local private organizations, local governments, States and Federal agencies. And private citizens to conserve, protect, restore, interpret, use and enjoy the values of the Potomac and its watershed: now, therefore, 

Be it resolved by the following members of the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America to:

  1. Recognize July 30, 1999 as “Potomac River Day” to recognize the special qualities of the Potomac basin and increase public awareness and appreciation of the river’s values and assets.
  2. Form a Potomac River Basin Caucus to help local, State and Federal leaders:; promote an alliance between river enthusiasts and elected officals; and work on basinwide economic, social and environmental issues and opportunities.
  3. Help to establish a Potomac River Basin Leadership Training effort.
  4. Urge citizens, private organizations, and government agencies to participate in the proposed (???) “2000 Potomac River Basin Forum” to share information about the condition of the watershed and to explore ways to improve public and private support for local conservation, restoration, revitalization, protection and education initiatives, and report back to the Potomac River Basin Caucus.
